There is no question that we have some serious environmental problems on the Earth today. Governments and Companies are starting to clean up their acts but as a voter and consumer you have power to make things change faster and even better. Every time you spend money you send a message to businesses and manufactures about what you care about the world you desire to live in. When you buy products that endanger rainforests or create untreatable pollution, as a bi-product of production, you are saying that gross negative environmental impacts are okay.

Making the decision to be more environmental friendly in your own life not only helps the environment but also:

    • Improves your health
    • Saves you money
    • And can be beneficial both socially and spiritually

The Environment and Your Health

It is not a coincidence that what is good for the planet is also good for your health. We are reliant upon the earth to provide us with our most basic and vital needs. Those are fresh air, clean water, and wholesome food. We cannot be healthy if our air is full of toxins and photochemical smog; our water is full of non-treatable toxins and our soil lacks the minerals that plants need to make our food nutritionally balanced. Choosing to lessen your environmental impacts will improve your health and the health of the rest of the planet as well.

Going green and saving money

Another interesting thing about minimizing our environmental impacts is that this will also save money. By reducing the amounts of water, electricity, and chemicals we use, we put money back into our pockets. We can then use it for other things or save it for a rainy day. No one likes to spend money needlessly on bills.

Many of the chemicals we use to clean our homes can be replaced with far safer and cheaper alternatives in the kitchen pantry. Insulate your home properly and you will drastically decrease your heating and cooling costs. Many things can be done at little or no cost to you and so you will start saving straight away, other things require spending some money but you will save in the long term.

Social and spiritual benefits

Developing a sustainable lifestyle can also have social and even spiritual benefits. Instead of slouching in front of the television, ignoring all around you, you may play a game of cards or even converse with your family. In an effort to minimize your environmental impacts you may find that you start to appreciate the small things in life. When you walk to the shops instead of driving you may start to appreciate the glorious colors nature provides in spring. If you go for a stroll after dinner instead of playing a computer game your health will improve but you may also admire a sunset for the first time in years. Instead of using electricity to listen to music you may find great pleasure in learning to play an instrument yourself and making your own music.

Looking for ways to minimize your impacts can shake you out of ways of habitual thinking and acting. You could find that life takes on new meaning, you could feel healthier and fitter than you have in years and with new interests to keep you mentally stimulated as well. You will also feel more at peace, more connected to the earth and more in touch with the present moment.

Doing your bit

To make a difference in the world is a choice. You can be part of the problem or part of the solution. You do not have to drastically change your life or go and live in a cave. It is about making simple everyday choices. Choosing to buy the simply wrapped product instead of the over packaged one. Walking to the shops instead of driving. Turning out the lights when you leave the room. Insulating the house and filling in the gaps. All these things help to keep the air cleaner, conserve our precious resources, and keep you and the planet healthy.

It is easy to say that I am just one person what I do will not make any difference. But you are not alone and you are not the only one. The best way to make a difference in the world is to lead by example. If you will take responsibility for your environmental impacts know that others will as well. And if we learn from the hundredth monkey syndrome then we know that we just need to reach a critical mass and then everyone will start to take responsibility for their environmental impacts. But we need some leaders and doers to get the ball rolling and to start the momentum to build the critical mass we need.
